This week on Intimately we wanted to be vulnerable with you and talk about an important topic that probably everyone has experienced at one time or another during this pandemic. And that is: Loneliness.
Life is hard right now. It’s incredibly easy to feel lonely during this time because of the isolation that so many are experiencing right now. There’s so much on our minds and so much to think about, but for disabled folks life presents unique challenges due to the pandemic that others may not have to face. Many in the disabled community are immunocompromised, and this means that the toll that COVID-19 can take on their bodies is more likely to be severe. Having dealt with the effects of long-term health issues already, there is also an added understanding and therefore fear of the potential long-term consequences of catching COVID-19. Isolation is not optional.
While some people are going out and going back to their normal lives, that’s not a choice that many disabled folks can make. There is no “normal”, and the isolation many experienced from March to May is still very real for those that need to take extra precautions. In fact, that feeling of isolation is almost more severe as social media shows a lot of the world going back to normal.
This makes staying connected with those around us more important than ever. It’s so easy to feel lonely when you need to stay inside your home for health reasons and can’t go out with friends. It’s important to make friends and have human connection throughout our days. We get it here at Intimately, our team members are feeling the same way and we’re all just a little bit lonely right now. That is why we’ve started a community for those needing connection, especially during these uncertain and scary times. And it’s not just typing in the online forums, although those can be very useful. It’s also Zoom coffee chats and connecting through zoom. It’s listening to speakers talk about what you’re going through. It’s about meeting new people and making a new best friend!
There has always been a lack of community in terms of disability. There aren’t nearly enough resources about disability and all that comes with it, and the resources that do exist are generally geared towards people with a common issue, or who have an official diagnosis, which can often take years and be an extremely isolating process in-and-of itself. We want to be there for you throughout that process and have a community of amazing women who are willing to meet others and create a feeling of support and empowerment.
While yes, here at Intimately we’re all about cute bras and giving you the most fashionable and adaptive lingerie to make you feel like your most confident and sexy self, we also want to give you a place where you can be who you are and connect with others in an authentic and meaningful way. There’s no judgement in our community, no hate, just women supporting women and learning about disability. We are all going through this in one way or another, so let’s get through this together.
This is your official invite to join our community of empowerment and incredible women! Ask questions, answer questions, share your thoughts, and make connections.
We'll see you there, and we can't wait to chat with you!
